How to Make Sustainable Fashion a Priority (without Going Broke!)

Updated: Nov 9

We all want to do what's best for the planet, but can our wallets get some love?

Sustainable fashion doesn't have to break the bank.

In a world where fast fashion dominates the market, making sustainable choices can feel daunting—especially when budget constraints come into play. How often do you think of $300 organic cotton t-shirts whenever you hear the term "sustainable fashion?"

But the good news is, prioritizing sustainable fashion doesn’t have to break the bank. By making small, mindful decisions, you can build a wardrobe that’s eco-friendly, cost-effective, and stylish. Here’s how you can embrace sustainable fashion on a budget.

Tip #1 - Shop Second-Hand & Thrift Stores

One of the easiest and most affordable ways to make sustainable fashion a priority is to embrace second-hand shopping. Thrift stores, consignment shops, and online platforms like Poshmark or Depop offer great deals on gently used items. You can find unique pieces at a fraction of the price of new ones, while reducing textile waste and the environmental impact of clothing production.

I have a Poshmark shop where I list clothes I no longer wear and a vintage shop called Rich Hippie Vibes on Etsy where I list the vintage finds that I also sell at my brick & mortar shop, The Sustainable Style Studio. Finding thrift, vintage and other secondhand shops that sell great quality clothes is a wonderful, affordable way to shop sustainable fashion.

Tip #2 - Upcycle & Repurpose Your Clothes

Rather than tossing out old or worn-out clothing, get creative with upcycling! Turn that old pair of jeans into trendy shorts or repurpose a worn-out shirt into a chic tote bag. If you enjoy DIY projects, upcycling is a fun way to add a personal touch to your wardrobe while minimizing waste.

Tip #3 - Invest in Quality Over Quantity

While it may seem more expensive upfront, investing in well-made, durable clothing saves money in the long run. Fast fashion items often wear out quickly, leading to more frequent replacements. Focus on timeless, versatile, classic pieces that can be mixed and matched across your wardrobe and you'll find that the price per wear is miniscle compared to a fast fashion piece that you'll wear only a couple of times.

Major Key: Embrace DIY Fashion as a Sustainable Fashion Choice

One of the best ways to practice sustainable fashion on a budget is to sew your own clothes and accessories as much as possible. DIY fashion allows you to control the quality of the materials used ensuring that they are eco-friendly and ethically sourced. By creating custom pieces, you reduce your reliance on mass-produced fast fashion. Not to mention, it's a fun, crafty experience for the whole family.

Whether it's sewing your own clothes from scratch, knitting your own scarves and sweaters, or crafting unique handbags and accessories; DIY projects are a rewarding way to express your creativity while making sustainable fashion choices. Plus, if sewing just isn't your thing, you can lean into upcycling what you already own, as stated above, to customize it to your style by dyeing, cutting, painting, embroidering, and using other techniques to personalize your wardrobe to your taste.

At the very minimum, learning to make repairs to your clothes could save you thousands of dollars over time.
